The Historic Balmain Fire Station

It has to be one of the more amazing looking buildings and in particular fire stations that I’ve come across in Sydney.

Set in 391 Darling Street Balmain and across the road from Balmain Town Hall. This historic Fire Station built in 1884 is well worth a visit.

Prior to the completion of the building in 1884, Balmain had a volunteer Brigade for almost 20 years which then registered with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade giving birth to the new station.

It’s in the Victorian Italianate style which was common at the time with beautiful shapes throughout, and it was designed by Charles Hellmrick.

It’s just an awesome structure that was a pleasure to photograph. These pictures were taken in mid morning autumn light, so it’s a little backlit.

But I’d love to return soon at a different time to see what it looks like in full sun.

It has to be one of the oldest fire stations in Sydney, as many of the early fire stations were built around this time in the early 1900’s.

I’d be interested to find out if it is the oldest in Sydney. So if anyone knows feel free to add it below.

I really enjoyed photographing this building and looking into a bit of the history of it. So I think I’ll start a bit of a search for some more great looking Fire Stations and photograph as many as I can.

Til next time!

Chris
