How to get to Wedding Cake Rock in Sydney

Wedding Cake Rock in the Royal National Park just South of Sydney City. It has to be one of the most infamous sites in NSW. With many a visitor and tourist trying to grab the best shot or a selfie with the famous rock.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the sight of it and it’s quite remarkable to look at. Over the years people has used the Rock for a social media photo and due to dangers of being so close to the edge and the ocean, the National Park has put up a fence around it to deter people from getting too close. It’s a risk that people have been willing to take, but now with massive fines it’s best to play it safe and shoot from the other side of the fence.

To get to the site, first head to the Royal National Park, which is around a hour drive from the CBD in Sydney. Then the closest access is via a 3km walk along the Coast Track from Bundeena to Wedding Cake Rock. The walk takes around a hour so be prepared and pack and dress accordingly for the trek. But it’s also one of my favorite hikes in Sydney and well worth the visit.

Shot on my trusty Canon 1DX with a 16-35mm lens.

Welcome to Chasing Light

I first picked up a camera when I was 14 years old, it was a Canon compact camera that was my mums and it was at the bottom of a lounge room drawer.

At the time I had no idea why the sudden urge came over me to pick it up and head out to the backyard.

But that one moment changed my life and put me on a path for the next 20+ years.

Instantly I swore to myself and anyone who would listen that I’m going to be a photographer one day.

I doubt many people believed me back then as it was in the film era and being a photographer at that point in time was like being a pink unicorn.
But I’ll forever be grateful to my younger self for that crazy dream and I’ve been extremely fortunate to live it out ever since.

I quickly dropped out of school at 16 to begin working with at the time the official photographer for the NRL.
A huge step forward from taking pictures in my backyard and a few years later at 19 I began a long standing career with the newspaper company Fairfax Media.

Through this blog I hope to share my stories and show a different side to photography.

Hopefully I’ll entertain you with some behind the scenes stories and share some photo tips along the way.

Photography and Life

After falling in love with photography in my mid teens and now some 25 years later of dedicating my life to the craft.

It felt the right time to start penning my thoughts on photography and the tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.

I’ve called it the world’s best hobby a million times before, and one that I’ve been lucky enough to earn a living from it since I was 16 years old and a high school drop out.

Born in Sydney’s South West, from the first picture I took on mums old compact camera I knew the life of photography was for me.

Leaving school in year 11 to become a junior photographer was a dream come true and a moment that shaped my life since.

I hope through this blog to tell some tails from the road and offer up a bit of education along the way.

Photography, still the world’s best hobby!
