The colour purple in the lush streets of Erskineville.

One of the prettier and less known streets to find the Jacaranda trees in Sydney. The lovely Ashmore Street in Erskineville is a perfect spot to add to the list of locations to see the colour purple. With the trees lining both sides of the road in sections, it creates a contrasting purple and green canopy that is great spot for a few pictures.

The street itself runs for two hundred meters or so starting from the busy Erskineville train station, then heads up to the main road of Erskineville.

It’s pretty rare to see both sides of the road with the jacaranda trees, and when they do it’s a pretty special site and well worth a photo shoot. The nice mix of the green and purple are made even better by the fact that the street runs east to west, so you can really make good use of the morning or afternoon sun.

Along the southern side of the street are the beautiful old Sydney terrace homes. And the mix of that old but trendy Sydney scene is quite unique when you add the purple to the streetscape. Even when the purple flowers fall onto the Sydney street, they add to charm that is jacaranda season.

My favourite from the photoshoot is this last picture above. With the fallen flowers from the tree covering the street and the afternoon light hitting the lightly textured Erskineville home and its garage it’s a great looking scene that only comes around once a year.

If you’re looking for places in Sydney to see the Jacaranda trees, I’d definitely recommend the colourful streets of Erskineville.

The Bridges of Sydney Series: Como Bridge, Como NSW

Name: Como Railway Bridge

Opened: The first bridge in 1885, then the adjoining bridge 1972.

Length of Bridge: 291 meters

Tips: The best views are from the Como pool, it’s also a footbridge so you can take a walk over it too.

Como Railway Bridge

Tucked away in the heart of Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, lies the picture perfect suburb of Como. Located on the edge of the Georges River and home to the stunning Como Bridge.

The bridge is joined by the suburb of Oatley to the north and Como to the south. It is a two lane crossing with the western lane for trains and the eastern lane for pedestrians and cyclists.

The pedestrian lane is actually the old train line bridge. It was converted to a footbridge in 1972 when they built a new adjoining bridge for the modern trains in the same year.

During the Covid 19 years of 2020/2021 the footbridge occasionally closed due to the certain lockdown restrictions at the time preventing people from moving between regions.

Currently it is open to cross for all.

It’s truly a beautiful bridge, especially given the stunning landscape it surrounds. It has many a great angle and one day I’d love to shoot it at sunrise as the shapes of the bridge would make for a great picture. For something a little more north try the-iconic-north-sydney-olympic-pool

So if you’re looking for things to do in Sydney, I definitely recommend a trip south to the lovely region of Como. Either by train or a drive it’s a great place all round to visit with a great cafe and parklands on the Como side.

Jacaranda trees in full bloom over the historic Como Hotel

Como in Sydney’s southern suburbs is the kind of suburb that if you haven’t been to you’re truly missing out.

A beautiful town on the Georges River and only a 45 minute drive from the Sydney CBD, with plenty of great parks, cafes and a pretty awesome looking pub the Como Hotel.

Built in the 1880’s and one of the oldest buildings in the Sutherland Shire, it’s just a great looking venue and with the purple of the Jacaranda, it makes for some pretty cool pictures.

Como is also home to a lovely park land area with its own tidal baths if you’re looking for a swim. Some pictures here of the pools https://chasinglight.photo.blog/2021/10/07/pools-of-the-sea-como-tidal-baths-in-spring/

Or if you’d rather stretch the legs and go for a walk you could try the historic Como Railway bridge and walk across to the town of Oatley. See here the the bridge https://chasinglight.photo.blog/2021/11/08/the-bridges-of-sydney-series-como-bridge-como-nsw/

But if you’re just looking for a place to see the awesome purple of the Jacaranda trees in Sydney, Como is a great suburb to check out for a visit.
